Wikitude Drive – AR Navigation System

Mobilizy GmbH reveals a preview of it’s augmented reality navigation system, the first fully functional mobile AR navigation system available for the Android platform. Wikitude Drive was developed by the Mobilizy Research & Development group in Salzburg, Austria, to satisfy the curiosity of the developers to see if it was feasible to combine real-time navigation with mobile augmented reality. The result of this quest is Wikitude Drive, a fully-functional, light weight navigational system which overlays point-to-point directions on a camera-view, without the need for maps.
Wikitude Drive boasts the following features:
- Mobile AR navigation, similar to a heads up display (HUD);
- Fully functional, map-less navigation;
- POI 2 POI navigation;
- Integrated voice commands (additional text-to-speech engine required);
- World wide navigational data which is accessed in real-time from the internet;
o (a mobile internet connection is necessary to access data while in motion) - Peer-to-peer navigational functions
o Social navigational features will be implemented in future releases - Interfaces with existing navigational APIs (for example: NavTeq, Map24, TeleAtlas)
- Launching for Android and iPhone soon.

Looks awesome, but the requirement of a data connection makes this far less useful IMHO as GPS navigation apps are most often used to navigate outside of one’s “home area” (whether traveling abroad or in another town). As a user is further removed from their “home area” they are less likely to know whether they will have consistent data connectivity (if at all). Data connectivity while traveling abroad (where GPS navigation is very useful) may even be impossible, making this killer app useless in the situations where it would be most useful.
It would be great if it could pull routing or simply mapping data from the device and/or SD card to provide information about the road one is traveling on and their route.

[...] Mobilizy’s Wikitude, an augmented reality app that overlays Wikipedia links onto your camera’s viewfinder, is still one of the most amazing apps in the Android Market. Wikitude Drive, which does the same with turn-by-turn directions, does it one better. As you can see in the video, Mobilzy’s take on the turn-by-turn video overlay isn’t the most refined—a nod to Blaupunkt on that one—and it seems a little distracting to use, as is. But that’s not to say that the concept isn’t fantastic, for one simple reason: Your eyes never really leave the road. Normal nav apps just show you a static, mapped representation of what’s coming, which does fine on the directions-giving front, but utterly fails on the helping-you-not-run-over-children-on-bikes front.
